FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS
THE ATLAS ARTIST EDITION 01 JOE MANEELY
(W/A/CA) Joe Maneely
The first book in Fantagraphics' new Atlas Artist
Edition series collects the best work of Marvel's top
artist of the 1950s in a lush, lavish, full-color, oversize
collector's volume, scanned directly from the original
printings and meticulously restored and presented in
a wealth of detail never seen before.
Joe Maneely was known for his draftsmanship, his versatility, and
his speed. He could draw horror, science fiction, war, crime, Madstyle
humor, Westerns, and funny animals with equal dexterity. His
tactile, chiaroscuro graphic approach to storytelling has made him
a legend among the comics cognoscenti, but because he never drew
superheroes and his life ended tragically at age 32, he has never
been given the attention his short but incandescent career deserves. Until now.
As Geoffrey C. Ward wrote in American Heritage, 'Maneely's knowledge of 19th
century artifacts was encyclopedic, his rumpled, unshaven cowboys all wore the
right hats, swung the right lariats, sat in the right saddles, fired the right model
Colts - with every screwhead and trigger guard and notched handle precisely
rendered.'
And that's only his Westerns. That tightly focused attention to detail pervades
his work in every genre.
The Atlas Artist Edition Vol. 1: Joe Maneely, presents a cornucopia of Maneely's
work for Marvel (then called Atlas) including Westerns (Kid Colt, Black Rider, Ringo
Kid, Wyatt Earp, Two-Gun Kid), pre-Code horror ('Haunted!', 'The Raving Maniac',
and the classic 'Your Name Is Frankenstein'), space opera (Speed Carter), war (Combat
Kelly), Mad-style parodies from the pages of Crazy and Riot, cold-war intrigue
and paranoia (Yellow Claw), and Maneely's pride and joy - his Arthurian champion,
The Black Knight. Series editor Dr. Michael J. Vassallo provides expert contextual
and historical commentary in a special essay for this volume.
Dr. Michael J. Vassallo is the pre-eminent expert on the Timely/Atlas period of Marvel's
history. He co-wrote The Secret History of Marvel Comics (Fantagraphics Books,
2013) and edited Atlas at War (2020) and Timely Confidential: When the Golden Age of
Comic Books Was Young (2017). He has written extensively for the Marvel Masterworks
series and maintains his own Timely/Atlas Comics blog. He lives in New York. (STL289912) (C: 0-1-2)

BILL WARD STUDIO ED HC
(W/A/CA) Bill Ward
Vintage glamour girl artist extraordinaire Bill Ward
gets the full Fantagraphics Studio Edition treatment
featuring Ward's most polished, fully realized pinups
from the 1950s and 1960s.
Bill Ward's glamour girls were the staples of countless men's and
humor magazines, where they shared the pages with cult models
like Bettie Page, Tina Louise, and Julie Newmar, and cartoons by
fellow 'good girl' artists such as Archie's Dan Decarlo and Playboy's
Jack Cole. What set Ward apart - and above - his talented
contemporaries in terms of sheer image-making was his use of the
conte crayon. When drawn on simple newsprint stock, this potent
combination created Ward's trademark gossamer sheen on his women's thigh-high
stockings.
This Fantagraphics Studio edition showcases the best of Ward's Humorama
work and includes a healthy number of what became known as his 'telephone girls.'
Tame by today's standards, Ward's telephone girls were always caught in candid
moments when they just happened to be talking on the phone dressed in gossamer
lingerie in innocently provocative poses.
Most of the images in this volume were drawn between 1955 and 1965 when Ward
was at the height of his skill. They have been scanned in super high resolution from
original art and reproduced to highlight every sheen and accentuate every curve to
its fullest. The book not only reproduces more than 150 of Ward's most beautifully
rendered illustrations, but also serves as a time capsule to a more innocent moment
in pop culture when these images were shocking.
The Fantagraphics Studio Edition also features an introduction by fashion/
style icon and burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese. An original pinup art collector
herself, Dita was mostly recently featured in Taylor Swift's music video 'Bejeweled.'
Alex Chun is a Los Angeles-based writer/editor focusing on all things pop culture.
Dita Von Teese is the brightest star in burlesque since Gypsy Rose Lee. As style icon
and muse to artists and photographers, she has appeared on magazine covers and
on the runways for the world's top designers. (STL271828) (C: 0-1-2)

POPEYE HC VOL 03 SEA HAG & ALICE THE GOON
(W/A/CA) E. C. Segar
In the third volume of the E.C. Segar Popeye Sundays,
Popeye and company embark on a gothic adventure
on the high seas!
Volume three centers around the epic Popeye adventure, 'Plunder
Island,' in which our endearing cast of characters takes to the
high seas in search of buried treasure - but must contend with the
ruthless Sea Hag and her strange sidekick, Alice the Goon. Steeped
in shadow and gothic imagery, this tale is an atmospheric and suspenseful
departure from the typical Popeye aesthetic - with a little
screwball comedy thrown in for good measure. Also in this volume,
Popeye proves to be a one-man wrecking crew on the gridiron,
Wimpy tries his unsteady hand at duck shooting (uh-oh!), and the
crew ride out to the Wild West town of Slither Creek on a rip-roaring
gold-hunting expedition. Plus, contemporary Filipino cartoonist Bong Redila
pens a lighthearted comic homage to the iconic, eerie duo headlining this volume.
An irresistible alchemy of slapstick humor, tender romance, and rags-to-riches
fantasy, Elsie Crisler Segar's newspaper comic strip, starring Popeye the sailor man,
captivated readers of the Roaring Twenties and beyond. Fantagraphics is thrilled to
bring Segar's whimsical world back into print, collecting the complete Popeye Sunday
stories in four gorgeous full-color volumes, each packaged in a die cut slipcase.
E.C. Segar (1894-1938) was an American cartoonist known for creating Popeye, the
star of his comic series Thimble Theatre. Bong Redila is a Filipino American illustrator

POPEYE HC VOL 01 OLIVE OYL & HER SWEETY (O/A)
(W/A/CA) E. C. Segar
Well, blow me down! This new four-volume series collects the complete run of the original
Popeye Sunday newspaper page adventures in an accessible and affordable paperback
format! Part slapstick, tongue-twisting comedy, part escapist, Depression-era fantasy, part
tenderhearted yet tumultuous romance, Elsie Crisler Segar's newspaper comic strip
captivated readers of the Roaring Twenties and beyond. And Popeye, the sailor
man, was the unlikely start of the show. Fantagraphics is thrilled to bring Segar's
whimsical world back into print, reviving the origins of the beloved spinach-eating
American icon for a whole new readership. The E.C. Segar Popeye Sundays series
collects the complete Popeye Sunday stories in four gorgeous full-color volumes,
each packaged in a deluxe slipcase. Volume one highlights Popeye's riotous romance with his sweet patootie - Olive Oyl. As he courts Olive in comically clumsy fashion, she proves that her sharp wit runs rings around his muddled brain! Next, he becomes a prizefighter and must
contend with a series of fearsome opponents, from Johnny Brawn to a literal gorilla.
Once outside the ring, however, his ferocity turns to sweet sentiment, and he gives
away all his winnings to poor widows, old folks, and orphanages. Featuring laughout-
loud gags, sensational slugfests, and endearing cast of characters, this revival
of classic Popeye adventures will captivate stalwart fans and new readers alike.

POPEYE HC VOL 02 WIMPY & HIS HAMBURGERS (O/A)
(W/A/CA) E. C. Segar
In the second volume of Fantagraphics' spectacularly packaged E.C. Segar Popeye Sundays, the incorrigible Wimpy takes center stage! An irresistible alchemy of screwball comedy, tender romance, and rags-to-riches fantasy, Elsie Crisler Segar's newspaper comic strip, starring Popeye the sailor man, captivated readers of the Roaring Twenties and beyond. Fantagraphics is thrilled to bring Segar's whimsical world back into print, collecting the complete Popeye Sunday stories in four gorgeous full-color volumes, each packaged in a deluxe vertical slipcase. Volume one highlighted the mercurial relationship between Popeye and Olive Oyl, while volume two shifts the focus to an even more dynamic connection, between that of J. Wellington Wimpy and his one true object of desire: a delectable hamburger. A notorious chiseler without a penny to his name, Wimpy is forever scheming new ways to bamboozle the local diner out of a mouth-watering morsel of his favorite meal. And the audacious chicaneries Wimpy employs in pursuit of his greatest love are as riotous today as they were when these strips first appeared in the '30s. Featuring laugh-out-loud gags, sensational slugfests, and an endearing cast of characters, this Wimpy-centric volume of classic Popeye adventures emphatically answers the question: Where's the beef? Plus, an illustrated appreciation/deconstruction of this legendary comic character by acclaimed cartoonist Kevin Huizenga! E.C. Segar (1894-1938) was an American cartoonist known for creating Popeye, the star of his comic series Thimble Theatre. Kevin Huizenga is a cartoonist living in Chicago.
