MINGUS HC
(W) Flavio Massaruto (A) Squaz
Bass player and pianist, composer and band leader, Charles Mingus is universally recognized as one of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz. An overflowing talent, who experienced the last fires of the swing age, the Be Bop revolution, the experimental seasons of Third Stream and Jazz Poetry up to Free Jazz. But he was also a tormented and angry soul, a man who, due to his mestizo origins, always had to deal with the hostility of American society. Journalist Flavio Massarutto and artist Squaz (Pasquale Todisco) retrace the stages of Mingus's journey, giving life to a non-canonical biography, which proceeds in paginated episodes like a succession of passages that form a musical suite: fragments of existence told by fishing from interviews, writings, testimonies and historical facts. The portrait of a musician who is the mirror of an era comes out, of a brilliant composer who was also one of the most clearly committed artists in denouncing racism, with real manifesto pieces such as the famous Fable of Faubus denouncing the segregationist governor of Arkansas. ALFRED HITCHCOCK MASTER OF SUSPENSE HC (O/A)
(W) Noel Simsolo (A) Dominique He
In 1960, the film Psycho traumatized viewers around the world. Never before had the angst or the suspense been so well presented in cinema. But where does the talent of this Alfred Hitchcock come from, the one now nicknamed the 'Master of Suspense'? To find out, we must first go back to his youth, in England, during the first half of the 20th century. Having grown up in a Catholic familya religious originality that will be felt in a large part of his cinema'Hitch' is an atypical Englishman who, very early on, has a taste for telling stories. The temptation to work for the cinema will not be long in coming, first as a graphic designer at Islington Studios in London where his visual talent will lead him to make his debut behind the camera, as an assistant and then as a full director. It is also here that he will meet Alma Reville, his assistant and wife who will accompany him throughout his storied career, including the jump to the big time in Hollywood. DJANGO HAND ON FIRE GREAT DJANGO REINHARDT HC (O/A)
(W) Salva Rubio (A) Efa
Django Reinhardt is a legend. But Django which may have meant 'I awake' was twice born. A first time in the snow, during the winter of 1910 in a nomadic gypsy family stationed in Liberchies, Belgium. The second in Saint-Ouen, near Paris, in the fall of 1928, when a fire in his caravan mutilated his left hand. This biogrpahy devoted to the youth of the prodigy musician features the passion and determination of the man who has always considered himself the greatest guitarist in the world. In this story-score, by laying out the panels like chords, the artist brings to life his passion in vibrating watercolor to better accompany the musical and technical development of the inventor of gypsy jazz. PITTSBURGH HC
(W/A) Frank Santoro
Pittsburgh is the story of a family, and a city. Frank Santoro faces a straightforward yet heart-rending reality: His parents, once high-school sweethearts, now never speak to each otherdespite working in the same building. Stuck in the middle, he tries to understand. The result is this book. Using markers, pencils, scissors, and tape, with a variety of papers, drawing in vivid colors and exuberant lines, Santoro constructs a multi-generational retelling of their lives. Framed by his parents' courtship and marriage, and set amid the vital but fading neighborhood streets, the pages of Pittsburgh are filled with details both quotidian and dramaticfrom his childhood mishaps to his father's trauma in Vietnaminterspersed throughout with the mute witness of the family dog, Pretzel. Pittsburgh is an extraordinary reimagining of the comics form to depict the processes of memory, and a powerful, searching account of a family taking shape, falling apart, and struggling to reinvent itself, as the city around them does the same.
